Ask about fitted cupboards in Custom House
Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Custom House station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Custom House?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form.
Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?
Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. We do not move meters or fuse boards, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.
Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?
Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.
Fitted cupboards for homes in Custom House
Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. Most enquiries start with storage for towels and bedding and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so we cover them while we work. Around Custom House, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. The storage can sit on its own plinth or be scribed over the skirting.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Storage in Custom House homes: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Custom House, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 64%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Custom House. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Purpose-built flats are more common around Custom House than across Newham: about 74% of households, against about 44%, based on Census 2021. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.
If you live in a period home close to St Matthew's Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. If your children go to St Joachim's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Custom House
Others want their cupboards to match the rest of the house. We can design doors that suit the style of the house, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Storage for towels and bedding
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
- A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
- Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
If you live near Thames Barrier Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.
Choosing a carpenter
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
What we do not do

What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
- The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
- You receive a quote in writing.
- The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Getting a quote
To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
