Wall beds in Custom House

What it is made from

Shelves

Shelf spans and depths are sized so they don’t sag.

Birch plywood

Shelving around the bed needs to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.

Wall beds in Custom House

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. Most enquiries start with hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a storage wall with a bed inside, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a home built since 2000, stud walls may hide pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Many homes around Custom House date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Questions we are often asked

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Custom House?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Custom House?

Yes, Custom House is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Newham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Why people ask for wall beds in Custom House

Some people are tired of sofa beds. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A study that doubles as a spare room

Living in a block of flats near Custom House station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Bedrooms in Custom House: local notes

In the streets around Custom House, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 64%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Custom House, Historic England’s list includes Warehouse K (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Warehouse W (Grade II), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Fewer homes around Custom House date from before 1919 than across Newham: about 4%, against about 37%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We check what the walls are made of during the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

If you live near Thames Barrier Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. For an older house near St Matthew's Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Check mattress size and weight limits

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. The bed needs room to fold down, so plan where furniture will sit.

From workshop to your room

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the space.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
