Fitted cupboards designed for your room

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

How we make fitted cupboards for East Ham

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. If your home has hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around East Ham are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that isn’t. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Fitted storage in East Ham

About 55% of the homes in the area around East Ham went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 11 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of East Ham. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 45% of households in the neighbourhood around East Ham live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses often have narrow halls and recesses where a shallow fitted cupboard helps.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Eastbury Manor House, about 1.9 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. For an older house near St Bartholomew's Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If you live near Beckton District Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan fitted cupboards. They help whatever the room:

  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colour.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, especially on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, and the space around them is often wasted. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, which can add a good deal of storage. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

How it’s made

Shelves

Shelves are spaced to suit what goes on them, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Wide shelves are made stiff enough not to sag.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it is done before the cupboards reach your home.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in East Ham

My house in East Ham is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Does a conservation area in or near East Ham affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you build cupboards for a boot room?

Yes, and the design starts with what the room has to hold, from coats and boots to laundry and cleaning things. Plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

What are your cupboards made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store.
  2. We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and go through the layout.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space.

Preparing the room

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Ask for a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
