Fitted cupboards for homes in Silvertown

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If you are living with tidying away the gas and electricity meters and a utility room with proper storage, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, which leaves little wall for storage. With many homes around Silvertown built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

Before fitting day

Advice

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Silvertown

I live near Custom House station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Silvertown?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What are the cupboards made of?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. Moving them is not our work, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it’s done before the cupboards reach your home.

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a cupboard need to stay straight under load, and birch plywood helps. We size each shelf for its span, depth and load.

What fitted cupboards can’t fix

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Making good walls after other work

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Storage in Silvertown homes: local notes

In the area around Silvertown, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 84%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There’s a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Silvertown, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 1% of homes around Silvertown were built before 1919, well below the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So the walls behind fitted cupboards here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Barnabas' Church, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. If you live in a flat close to Custom House station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For a family home near Britannia Village Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can normally be set right at the hinge.

Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They shape the design, and planning around them is much easier than changing things later.
