Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 66% of the housing in the streets around Dagenham, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Dagenham. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 47% of households in the neighbourhood around Dagenham live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

If your home is one of the older houses near St. Peter and St. Paul, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Dagenham Dock station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Dagenham is in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, about 3 miles west of Barking. Anywhere in Dagenham, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Across Barking and Dagenham, we cover Dagenham and the places around it.

In RM10, RM9, RM13 and RM7, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street like Exeter Road, Plumtree Close and Rodwell Place, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for wall beds. Dagenham sits close to the B178, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. If you are just outside Dagenham, we also cover Becontree (1 mile north-west), Dagenham Green (1 mile south-west), Beam Park (1 mile south), South Hornchurch (1 mile south-east) and Hornchurch Marshes (2 miles south). Other parts of Barking and Dagenham we cover include Barking (3 miles west), Thames View Estate (2 miles west), Barking Riverside (2 miles south-west), Castle Green (2 miles west), Chadwell Heath (3 miles north) and Creekmouth (3 miles south-west).

Wall beds for homes in Dagenham

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed does not dominate the working day. We can allow for cables to the desk, while new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a real mattress for visitors and a guest room that sits empty most of the time.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Dagenham, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. Small rooms like that suit wall beds, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Is it time for wall beds?

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a wall bed makes that possible.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A real mattress for visitors

For families living near Village Infants' School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

How to choose a carpenter in London

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the measuring visit too.

FAQs: wall beds in Dagenham

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Dagenham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Dagenham?

Yes, Dagenham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

What does a wall bed cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How fitting works for wall beds

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking near your home
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • How you want to use the space

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
