Pricing fitted cupboards in Downe

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The internal fittings
  • The overall size of the piece

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How we make fitted cupboards for Downe

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. People usually come to us about cupboards that suit a period house and a cupboard for the meters with easy access; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Downe, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is Downe in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Downe is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Arranging a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Downe homes and fitted cupboards

About 31% of the homes in the streets around Downe went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 27% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Downe Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Downe. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Downe. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For families living near Downe Primary School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If you live in a flat close to Chelsfield station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Why bespoke in Downe?

Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. A fitted cupboard is part of the room and is designed for this home. How long you will stay is worth weighing up. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What you get with us

  • 300+ projects completed
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • We work across all London boroughs

See bespoke vs off-the-shelf or how to compare quotes.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
