Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

How to prepare

Advice

Built-in bookshelves in Downe

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details, whichever suits the room. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a bare wall above a doorway and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of built-in bookshelves are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Downe, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Built-in bookshelves in Downe: local notes

In the streets around Downe, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Downe Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Downe. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. All of London, Bromley included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Downe is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

Down House, about 0.6 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. For families living near Downe Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Living in a block of flats near Chelsfield station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight, with birch plywood, a stiffening lip or a support where needed. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed before we start.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Downe

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Downe?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It’s possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.
