About our fitted cupboards in Pitshanger
Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are cupboards that suit a period house and storage for coats and shoes in the hallway.
In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Fitted cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room isn’t. You choose the paint colour, and whether it is spray-painted or hand-painted.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. For awkward spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, which may not suit what you need to store. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

From workshop to your room
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
- The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
- You receive a written quote.
- Everything is built in our workshop.
- We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.
Before fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Getting a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Practical tips
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Point out anything that needs access
- Leaseholders: check your lease first
- Do not store things against the boiler
- Make a note of what needs a home
If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.
It is useful to list what you want to store before we measure. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, and knowing this early saves changes later.
How it is made
Birch plywood
Long shelves in a cupboard need to stay straight under load, and birch plywood is a good fit. Span, depth and load all matter.
Shelves
Sagging shelves are avoidable with the right thickness, lip or support.
Your questions about fitted cupboards in Pitshanger
Is Pitshanger in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?
Yes, Pitshanger is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Ealing and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Does a conservation area in or near Pitshanger affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?
Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.
How long will the cupboards take to fit?
The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We’ll talk it through during the design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
How are fitted cupboards priced?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To get started, use our contact form.
Do you need fitted cupboards in Pitshanger?
Others want their cupboards to match the rest of the house. We can design doors that suit the style of the house, which keeps the look calm.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:
- A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
- Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
- A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
- Landing shelves for bedding and towels
For an older house near Church of St Barnabas, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Can you see real work of theirs?

If your street in Pitshanger is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
