How we make fitted cupboards for Fortune Green
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. Most enquiries start with a utility room with proper storage and tall cupboards where space is short; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. Around Fortune Green, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Fortune Green
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Fortune Green were built before 1919 (about 58%) and since 2000 (about 13%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. The centre of Fortune Green is within about a quarter of a mile of the Redington Frognall Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Camden included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Fortune Green, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
Living in a block of flats near West Hampstead Thameslink station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses such as Fenton House, about 0.7 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Luke, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.
Fortune Green is part of the London Borough of Camden, about 4 miles south-east of St Pancras. Fortune Green is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. In Camden, Fortune Green is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 28 places on our list.
In NW3, NW6 and NW2, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You contact us about fitted cupboards.
- We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways. It is useful to tell us about parking then, as a van normally needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- The sections are carried in, joined and set level.
Before we arrive
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Arranging a design visit
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Why bespoke in Fortune Green?
Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. A fitted cupboard is part of the room, and it’s made for this home rather than the next one. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
What you get with us
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
- Saturday work by arrangement
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote
Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Looking after your furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:
- List what you want to store before the design visit
- Mention any parking or lift rules
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Think about how the cupboards will get in
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. If a door catches, it is normally a small hinge adjustment.
Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They affect where doors, panels and vents go, and planning around them is much easier than changing things later.

Questions we’re often asked
I live in a flat in Fortune Green. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Fortune Green?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
