Seven Dials Fitted Cupboards

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted cupboards for homes in Seven Dials, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • A utility room with proper storage
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

How we make fitted cupboards for Seven Dials

We fit fitted cupboards in Seven Dials and across London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure and talk through what you need, and then send you a quote. Once agreed, we make the cupboards in our workshop and fit them in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know before we start. If you’re living with using the full height of a room and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Seven Dials, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

What we do not do

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Measure the route into the room not just the room
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can typically be set right at the hinge.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.

Making use of tricky spaces in Seven Dials

About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Seven Dials went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. 31 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Seven Dials. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 49% of homes in the neighbourhood around Seven Dials were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older homes tend to have awkward recesses and uneven walls, which is where fitted cupboards help, with each one scribed to the wall.

If you live in a period home close to Soho Baptist Chapel, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If you live in a flat close to Tottenham Court Road station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to St Anne's Churchyard? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Seven Dials?

Yes, we work across Camden, Seven Dials included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Seven Dials?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To get started, use our contact form.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we have agreed, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Advice

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it’s finished before fitting day.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors on a meter or fuse board cupboard need to open easily, so engineers can reach what’s inside.
