Why people ask for fitted cupboards in North End

Standard cupboards do not sit well in many period homes. Uneven floors and walls that are not square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving

For a family home near The King Alfred School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

About our fitted cupboards in North End

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in a colour agreed with you. Most enquiries start with cupboards for a utility or boot room and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

With a large share of homes around North End built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Is bespoke worth it?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is tricky, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is usually the better answer. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, message us from the contact page.

Questions from North End

Is North End in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London, and North End is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hampstead Heath station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form.

What are the cupboards made of?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. Moving them is not our work, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Go easy on new doors for a while

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colour.

Let us know about parking and access at the design visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and what it needs.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Advice

Fitted storage in North End

About 52% of the homes in the area around North End went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. 7 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of North End. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We will plan where the van can stop.

For a flat near Hampstead Heath station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Alban the Martyr, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.
