About our fitted cupboards in Hampstead

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. People typically come to us about using the full height of a room and storage for towels and bedding, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Hampstead are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that isn’t. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What we do not do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Building work or structural changes

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it is worth doing before the design is agreed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Questions from Hampstead

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Hampstead?

Yes, we work across Camden, Hampstead included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Finchley Road & Frognal station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes, that is part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and make sure an engineer can reach it.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold.
  2. We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and discuss the layout.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Advice

Making use of tricky spaces in Hampstead

In the streets around Hampstead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 9%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Hampstead is in the Redington Frognall Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live near Kilburn Grange Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Institute of St Marcellina, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Fenton House, about 0.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Why bespoke in Hampstead?

Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, and the space around them is often wasted. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, which can add a good deal of storage. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
