Loft storage in Furzedown

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You let us know about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

About our loft storage in Furzedown

Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. We design them around what you need to store in Furzedown. People usually come to us about seasonal things cluttering the loft room and unused space in a dormer, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Furzedown, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.

Doors and drawer fronts

An access door into the eaves can match the rest of the fronts. It opens fully, so the space behind can still be reached. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

Loft storage in Furzedown: local notes

In the streets around Furzedown, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Furzedown include Furzedown House (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Penwortham School (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in Furzedown joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For an older house near St Paul's Church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. Close to Figge's Marsh? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2.9 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

What affects the price in Furzedown

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What to send when you get in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Your questions about loft storage in Furzedown

Does a conservation area in or near Furzedown affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Furzedown?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We will work out the layout when we visit.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Drawers in the knee wall typically involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

We make the storage in sections sized for the route. At the design visit, we measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landings. That way, even a large wardrobe can reach the loft.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf pieces come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the rest of the room. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
