What prompts fitted cupboards in West Norwood
Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
For a flat near West Norwood station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Fitted cupboards in West Norwood
We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in the colour you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for towels and bedding and tidying away the gas and electricity meters; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Whether your home in West Norwood is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there is typically a space that could work harder. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. We plan the details of the day at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
- At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
- You get a written quote for the cupboards we’ve agreed.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop.
- We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space.
How to prepare
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
How to get a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

Storage in West Norwood homes: local notes
About 38% of the homes in the neighbourhood around West Norwood went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 75 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of West Norwood. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. That typically means a van in West Norwood needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.
If your home is one of the older houses near West Norwood Congregational Church, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. Kingswood House, about 0.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.
West Norwood is about 3 miles north of Stockwell, part of the London Borough of Lambeth. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and West Norwood is part of that. We cover places right across Lambeth, large and small.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Common questions about fitted cupboards
Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Norwood station?
Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Does a conservation area in or near West Norwood affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?
Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cupboard.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once everything is in place. Small marks are simple to touch in.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
