Gipsy Hill Window Seats

Planning window seats for a home in Gipsy Hill? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.

  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator

Window seats designed for your room

Window seats in Gipsy Hill: what you get

A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. For a home in Gipsy Hill, it starts with a design visit to measure the window and talk through the design. We make window seats from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a radiator that makes the space hard to use and a bay window that’s hard to furnish.

Many homes around Gipsy Hill date from the post-war decades. Post-war homes usually have squarer rooms and fewer nooks than period ones, so window seats often create the storage the house never had. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Gipsy Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

My home in Gipsy Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Window seats are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Is it time for window seats?

Some people plan a window seat as part of updating a room. It’s worth talking to us before decorating, so the work can be timed sensibly. Decorating itself is for your decorator.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • No space for toys and games
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator

The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 0.5 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Real projects you can actually look at

How to choose a carpenter in London

When you need someone else

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Seat cushions, which you source separately
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
  • Fixing the window itself

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Window seats for homes in Gipsy Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Gipsy Hill were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and before 1919 (about 29%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Gipsy Hill Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Gipsy Hill. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you are unsure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Gipsy Hill joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. Close to Long Meadow? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Post-war houses tend to have straightforward halls and stairs, which helps when the sections come in. Even so, the route is measured at the design visit. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
  5. We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Lift-up lids

A lid that lifts is the simplest form of window seat storage. You will need to move any cushion to open it, so it suits things you reach for now and then.

Practical tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
  • Tell us about parking during the design visit
  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.

Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, get in touch through our contact form and describe what’s happening.
