Fitted cupboards in Kennington

In many London hallways, space is tight, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath for putting shoes on by the door. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and storage for coats and shoes in the hallway.

Most households around Kennington live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat, the hall, the recesses and the windows are where extra storage normally goes. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat. If a boiler or consumer unit sits in a cupboard, it keeps its clearances and access.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

What affects the price in Kennington

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The overall size of the piece

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Getting in touch

These details help when you contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • How you want to use the space

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish, and the moisture-resistant grade suits damper rooms.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it is done before the cupboards reach your home.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Moving gas or electricity meters

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitted storage in Kennington

About 32% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Kennington went up since 2000, and about 26% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 131 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kennington. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. Newer homes are more common around Kennington than across Lambeth: about 32% date from 2000 onwards, against about 17%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mark, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Vauxhall Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a period home close to Calvary Church of God in Christ, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

What happens on fitting day

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
