Your questions about fitted cupboards in Gospel Oak

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Gospel Oak?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Gospel Oak?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Fitted cupboards in Gospel Oak

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, such as by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. Typical reasons to get in touch are a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Gospel Oak, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. That’s where fitted storage comes in.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. If a door catches, it’s normally a small hinge adjustment.

Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They affect where doors, panels and vents go, and it’s easiest to plan for them at the start.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish that suits period homes. You choose the paint colour.

Shelves

Adjustable shelves let you change the layout later as your storage changes.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Building work or structural changes
  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer

Gospel Oak homes and fitted cupboards

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Gospel Oak, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Martin (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west, and Church of All Hallows (Grade II*), under half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. A van working in Gospel Oak will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Living in a block of flats near Gospel Oak station? Then fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near Highgate Road Chapel, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. The wider area includes historic houses like Keats House, about 0.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
