Fitted cupboards in Chalk Farm

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. If you are living with a utility room with proper storage and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

With most households around Chalk Farm in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern developments are both possible. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. In a maisonette, the space under the internal stairs is worth using.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitted storage in Chalk Farm

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Chalk Farm were built before 1919 (about 41%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 129 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Chalk Farm. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 57% of households in the neighbourhood around Chalk Farm, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live in a period home close to St Silas Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. If your children go to Haverstock School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live near Primrose Hill, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where there’s no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors on a meter or fuse board cupboard need to open easily, so engineers can reach what’s inside.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Chalk Farm

I live in a flat in Chalk Farm. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Chalk Farm?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London, and Chalk Farm is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

Practical tips

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Point out anything that needs access

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colour.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.
