Fitted home offices in Gospel Oak: what you get

Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We will look at how the room is used when we visit in Gospel Oak. Most enquiries start with an alcove or landing that could take a desk and shelves that sag under books and files; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A desk has to be level even when the floor isn’t, so desks in older homes are levelled on site. Around Gospel Oak, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so it’s something we plan for from the start. The shelving above follows the wall, with the edges scribed.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Gospel Oak

I live in a flat in Gospel Oak. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Home offices are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit fitted home offices to the uneven walls of an older house in Gospel Oak?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

How is a home office priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, use our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is it possible to have an office and a guest bed in one room?

It varies with the size of the room. An office on one wall often leaves room for a bed. We will look at the options at the design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an awkward space, standard pieces leave gaps. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is a workspace that uses the room well. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

What affects the price in Gospel Oak

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What to send when you contact us

These details help when you contact us:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Home working in Gospel Oak: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the streets around Gospel Oak, with about 19% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Gospel Oak, 20 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. About 48% of homes in the area around Gospel Oak were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age often have alcoves beside a chimney breast that can take a desk, with shelving above.

If your children go to Carlton Primary School or a school nearby, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Martin, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Parliament Hill, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Built-in desks
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Filing drawers
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so home offices are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Related advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
