Green Street Green homes and fitted cupboards

About 45% of the homes in the streets around Green Street Green went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 22% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Green Street Green include Chelsfield Hall Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Denbarn Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Green Street Green (about 45%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Homes from that era tend to have little built-in storage, so fitted cupboards make a real difference, with fixings chosen for the wall.

Close to Hewitt's Chalk Bank? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

About our fitted cupboards in Green Street Green

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe engineer. People typically come to us about storage for towels and bedding and cupboards for a utility or boot room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Green Street Green is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Green Street Green

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Green Street Green?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Green Street Green is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Green Street Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What are the cupboards made of?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

How we price fitted cupboards

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What the furniture needs to hold

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

The problems fitted cupboards solve

When a house gains a utility or boot room, people want it fitted out properly. There are appliances, coats, boots and cleaning things to fit in, and a run of fitted cupboards can hold them neatly.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving

If you live in a flat close to Chelsfield station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
