The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. Typical reasons to get in touch are cupboards for a utility or boot room and cupboards that suit a period house; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a block, the lift, the corridors and the door to the flat set the size of each section. Most households around Hackney Central live in purpose-built flats, so fitted cupboards are drawn in sections from the start. Floors in the corridor and the flat are covered on the way in.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Fitted cupboards in Hackney Central: local notes

In the streets around Hackney Central, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Hackney Central, 23 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home in Hackney Central is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Michael and All Angels, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Sutton House, about 0.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Hackney Central is about 1 mile south-west of Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. Wherever you are in Hackney Central, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We list Hackney Central among 20 places we cover in Hackney.

Design visits and fitting in E8, E9 and E2 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and normally cost less, and in a square room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hackney Central?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live in a flat in Hackney Central. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe engineer.

What are the cupboards made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in a colour you choose.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Hackney Central

Others want their cupboards to match the rest of the house. Painted doors with a simple frame can sit happily alongside period skirting and coving, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots

Living in a block of flats near London Fields station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early

A boiler cupboard should be left as it was designed, with nothing stored against the boiler or over its vents. The doors open wide for servicing, so the engineer can reach the boiler.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
