Fitted Cupboards in Hackney

We make fitted cupboards for homes in Hackney, designed around the room you have. Your fitted cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
  • Tall cupboards where space is short

Need fitted cupboards in Hackney?

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and what it needs.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. You receive a quote in writing.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Before fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

About our fitted cupboards in Hackney

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly, while keeping them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. People usually come to us about storage for towels and bedding and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

One flat can have concrete, block and plasterboard walls side by side. Since most households around Hackney live in purpose-built flats, we check each wall during the design visit before choosing fixings. Storage on a lightweight wall stands on the floor and is fixed back for stability.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit

A boiler cupboard should be left as it was designed, with nothing stored against the boiler or over its vents. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

If there is damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

Fitted storage in Hackney

About 33% of the homes in the area around Hackney went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Hackney, 15 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 57% of households in the streets around Hackney, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For an older house near Church of St Luke, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 0.3 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. If you live in a flat close to Homerton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Hackney is part of the London Borough of Hackney, about 2 miles south-west of Shoreditch. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Hackney is part of that. We cover places right across the rest of London.

Postcode districts we cover here for fitted cupboards: E9, E8, E3 and E5. We cover homes on streets such as Homerton High Street, Primrose Square and St John's Church Road, whether you want fitted cupboards or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Hackney include the A107 and B113. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted cupboards include Homerton (1 mile north), Lower Clapton (1 mile north), Hackney Central (1 mile west), London Fields (1 mile south-west) and Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of the rest of London, our area takes in Shoreditch (2 miles south-west), Hoxton (2 miles south-west), West Hackney (2 miles north-west), Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Stamford Hill (2 miles north-west) and Upper Clapton (2 miles north).

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Making good walls after other work
  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Hackney?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Hackney?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and typically cost less, and in a square room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to leave gaps. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, which wastes the space above. Built-in pieces use the full height.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.
