Hackney Central Walk-in Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Hackney Central starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A built-in dressing table
  • A use for a small spare room

Walk-in wardrobes in Hackney Central: what you get

Most designs start with the hanging. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. If your home has moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and separate space for two people’s clothes, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Most homes around Hackney Central are purpose-built flats, whether in mansion blocks or newer developments. A mansion block bedroom may have a chimney breast, high ceilings and walls that aren’t straight, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls. The fixings are chosen for whichever wall you have.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Walk-in wardrobes in Hackney Central: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hackney Central, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. There are 92 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hackney Central. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. So a van fitting furniture in Hackney Central usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Close to Haggerston Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 0.5 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Hackney Central

I live in a flat in Hackney Central. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Walk-in wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Fields station?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You let us know about the room and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Hackney Central

Some people want a calmer bedroom. Moving clothes into a separate space leaves the bedroom simpler and quieter to look at.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Somewhere to sit and get ready
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

For a family home near Gayhurst Community School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Advice on your lease
  • Structural changes or removing walls
  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
