Fitted cupboards for homes in Dalston

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. Most enquiries start with hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and a neat cupboard around the boiler, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With most households around Dalston in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern developments are both possible. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Wiring for lights or sockets

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Ventilated doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. For tricky spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Built-in pieces are sized for each stretch of wall.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Why choose us

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

For meter cupboards, the doors or panels are designed for easy access for engineers and meter readers.

Birch plywood

Shelves that carry weight need a strong board, and birch plywood helps. We size each shelf for its span, depth and load.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Dalston

Off-the-shelf cupboards rarely suit older houses. Uneven floors and walls that are not square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access

For a family home near Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

There are 97 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Dalston. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. In Dalston, a van will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Dalston Junction station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Questions from Dalston

My home in Dalston is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

I live near Dalston Junction station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the space. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
