Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panelled fronts can suit a period room. The gaps are kept even all along.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

Fitted home offices in Hackney Central

Each home office is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits desks and long shelves, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Hackney Central. Typical reasons to get in touch are no proper place to work from home and glare from a window on the screen; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a flat, a desk built into a wall of bedroom storage uses space well, with shelves above and drawers below. Since most households around Hackney Central live in purpose-built flats, combining jobs in one piece of furniture often makes sense. Cable routes are built in, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Plastering and decorating around the office
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You get in touch and let us know how you work and where you’d like the office, including the equipment you use.
  2. We come to measure and work out where the desk, shelves and cable routes should go. New sockets are for your electrician, so it is useful to think about them early.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office we’ve discussed.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, sized for the room and the route in, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level, with cable routes left clear.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. A fitted desk can have routes built in for chargers, screens and printers. That keeps the desk and the floor tidy. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what to look for in a quote.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • How you want to use the space

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit fitted home offices in a flat in Hackney Central?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Home offices are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hackney Central?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. The desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand comfortably, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. The conversion itself isn’t our work.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you add power points to the desk?

We do not do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. It’s useful to agree the positions at the design visit.
