Fitted cupboards in Harringay

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and a utility room with proper storage.

A large share of the homes around Harringay were built before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, made to follow walls that are seldom true.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Harringay

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harringay Green Lanes station?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Harringay?

Yes, we work across Haringey, Harringay included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away without getting in the way of access. Moving them is not our work; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.

What are the cupboards made of?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Harringay

Standard cupboards don’t sit well in many period homes. Sloping floors, walls that lean and odd alcove widths leave gaps that collect dust and look untidy. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters

For an older house near St Paul's Harringay, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold.
  2. We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and discuss the layout. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we’ve agreed.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How we price fitted cupboards

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The overall size of the piece

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What to send when you get in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Honest limits

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Making use of tricky spaces in Harringay

In the area around Harringay, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 75%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 8%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Harringay include The Salisbury Public House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 34% of households in the neighbourhood around Harringay, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
