Under-stairs storage for your home in Harringay

Under-stairs storage in Harringay

Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. Wherever your home is in Harringay, the process is the same. Most enquiries start with a staircase with untidy space beneath it and a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Harringay were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. That’s where fitted storage comes in, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How big the furniture is
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, message us from the contact page.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a written quote for the storage.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

The problems under-stairs storage solve

Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. You cannot stand up in it, and you can’t reach the back without kneeling. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Harringay, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

What to check before you book

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Storage in Harringay homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Harringay were built before 1919 (about 75%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 8%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Harringay include The Salisbury Public House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The share of homes built before 1919 around Harringay, about 75%, is well above the figure for Haringey as a whole, about 54%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of under-stairs cupboards.

The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 1.6 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. Close to Chestnuts Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, but the space under a staircase rarely offers either. Boxed units typically leave awkward gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It’s a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Harringay

Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Harringay?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Harringay?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London, and Harringay is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter isn’t our work, so we design for where it is now.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
