About our fitted cupboards in Muswell Hill

Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, alongside spaces for the washing machine and dryer you choose. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, and we leave room for their work in the design. People usually come to us about a neat cupboard around the boiler and a linen cupboard on the landing; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around Muswell Hill date from then. Fitted cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The internal fittings

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Getting in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Leave room in front of the meters

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and avoid heavy cleaning. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

Let us know about parking and access at the design visit. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Muswell Hill

My home in Muswell Hill is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Muswell Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.
