Walk-in wardrobes in Hayes: what you get

A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, and we design the units to allow for it. People normally come to us about moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and a side each for a couple; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Hayes, bedrooms are often simple shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Hayes

Is Hayes in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. Hayes is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hayes?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

Either works. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. Many people choose a mix.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes, if there is enough space. A section of the room can become a dressing area, open or behind doors. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Sometimes a house changes and a room becomes spare. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

Walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary the Virgin, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Arranging a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Hayes homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 72% of the housing in the area around Hayes, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Hayes, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Bromley sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Rectory, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Coney Hall Recreation Ground, keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and normally cost less, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. A bespoke walk-in wardrobe is made to the room. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting in the room lets the units match the doors and skirting.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, in any colour you choose.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
