Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Fitted cupboards in North Ockendon: what you get

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. Most enquiries start with a linen cupboard on the landing and a cupboard for the meters with easy access; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around North Ockendon, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath. Fitted cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Fitted cupboards for homes in North Ockendon

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 73% of the housing in the neighbourhood around North Ockendon, with about 15% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of North Ockendon, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Magdalene (Grade I), under half a mile south, and The Rectory (Grade II), under half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Havering are set locally. Depending on your street in North Ockendon, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

For families living near The James Oglethorpe Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If you live in a flat close to Ockendon station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Measure the route into the room as well as the room

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and don’t block the ventilation. The doors open wide for servicing, so the engineer can reach the boiler.

Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They shape the design, and it’s easiest to plan for them at the start.

Why bespoke in North Ockendon?

Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, and the space around them is often wasted. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, which can add a good deal of storage. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why choose us

  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what a quote should include.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Ockendon station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. We don’t move meters or fuse boards, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.

What fitted cupboards can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
