Walk-in wardrobes in Puddle Dock
Our walk-in wardrobes are made for homes in Puddle Dock and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure and plan the layout, then a written quote. Everything is made at our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room for two wardrobes in one space and a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom.
A good part of the housing around Puddle Dock is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

When is bespoke worth it?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Bedrooms in Puddle Dock: local notes
About 80% of the homes in the streets around Puddle Dock went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 11% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Puddle Dock include Franks Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than half of the homes in the area around Puddle Dock (about 80%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are typically simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.
If you live in a period home close to Moor Lane Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For families living near The James Oglethorpe Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Puddle Dock
Some people want a calmer bedroom. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
- A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
- Separate space for two people’s clothes
- Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
For a flat near Upminster station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Choosing a carpenter
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Why bespoke in Puddle Dock?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. In return, the layout is built around your clothes and your room. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
Why choose us

- Every London borough and the City of London covered

How fitting day works
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- We come to measure and go through the design.
- A written quote follows.
- We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
- We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the area where the furniture is going

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
Is parking a problem for fitting in Puddle Dock?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
I live near Upminster station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?
Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. We design the units to let air move, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.
How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we quote once we have measured. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form.
