Fitted wardrobes in Charlton: local notes

In the streets around Charlton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Charlton is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around Charlton (about 29%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Post-war bedrooms are usually simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

Queen's House, about 1.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For an older house near St Catherine Labouré, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a flat near Charlton station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Charlton is in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, about 2 miles east of Plumstead. Charlton is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our Greenwich coverage includes Charlton.

We work across the SE7 and SE18 postcode area. You’ll find streets here like Floyd Road, Guild Road and Priolo Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted wardrobes. Nearby, we also make fitted wardrobes in New Charlton (1 mile north-west), Westcombe Park (1 mile west), Woolwich (1 mile east), Vanbrugh Park Estate (1 mile south-west) and Kidbrooke (2 miles south). Across the rest of Greenwich, our area takes in Plumstead (2 miles east), Greenwich (2 miles west), Eltham (3 miles south), Well Hall (2 miles south), Coldharbour (4 miles south) and New Eltham (4 miles south).

How we make fitted wardrobes for Charlton

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are too little room for clothes and empty alcoves in the bedroom.

Where the window, radiator and door sit decides most of a bedroom layout. Whatever kind of home you have in Charlton, we start there, then plan fitted furniture on the walls that are left. Nothing is built tight over a radiator, so the heat still reaches the room.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Charlton

Is parking a problem for fitting in Charlton?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live in a flat in Charlton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We talk through both during the design visit.

How we price fitted wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The number of doors and drawers

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Arranging a design visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.
