How we make fitted wardrobes for Eltham
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. Typical reasons to get in touch are mismatched bedroom furniture and no space in front for doors to swing, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Post-war bedrooms tend to be simple rectangles, often with the window on the outside wall and the door near a corner. Many homes around Eltham date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so fitted furniture can often take a whole wall without awkward cuts. The space in front is planned first, so doors open fully.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for each. Tell us about any building rules on lifts or working hours at the measuring visit.
- You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.

How to get a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Eltham
A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role without crowding the floor. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
If your children go to St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
Before you choose who makes it
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Eltham
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Eltham?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Does a conservation area in or near Eltham affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Which boards do you build with?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, so there’s typically a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture tends to leave gaps at the ends of a wall and space above it, which fitted furniture uses. Every width is made for the room.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Eltham
About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Eltham went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 28% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Eltham, Historic England’s list includes Eltham Lodge (Grade I), under half a mile north-west, and Great Hall of Eltham Palace (Grade I), less than half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Greenwich is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Eltham, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near Mottingham station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Eltham Palace, about 0.4 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Doors and drawer fronts
Hinged doors suit rooms with space in front. Sliding doors suit narrow rooms.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour before we start.
When you need someone else
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Structural changes to the room
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
