How we make fitted wardrobes for Kidbrooke

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. If your home has a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes, fitted wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Kidbrooke, bedrooms usually have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Materials and finishes

Hanging rails

Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach without a step. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.

Birch plywood

For drawers that are used every day, birch plywood boxes are hard-wearing, standing up to daily opening.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you get in touch:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Advice

Kidbrooke homes and fitted wardrobes

In the area around Kidbrooke, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 60%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 13%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Kidbrooke include Coronet Cinema (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 33% of households in the streets around Kidbrooke live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

For an older house near St Barnabas, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Living in a block of flats near Kidbrooke station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Henwick Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Does a conservation area in or near Kidbrooke affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Kidbrooke?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We look at it with you when we measure.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

It is common, and it is allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls, so the doors line up properly.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
