Fitted wardrobes in New Eltham: what you get
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are damp or musty clothes against an external wall and wardrobes that are full to bursting.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around New Eltham, bedrooms typically have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

What we do not do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.
Questions from New Eltham
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in New Eltham?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you cover homes near New Eltham station?
Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It is planned so there is room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

Flats, conversions and lettings
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.
What happens on fitting day
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.
How to prepare
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Getting a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Is bespoke worth it?
Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. If you are renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in New Eltham
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around New Eltham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of New Eltham is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If you live on or close to a main road in New Eltham, let us know at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Eltham Palace, about 1.1 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
