Fitted cupboards in Charlton: what you get

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most tricky places, such as by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. If your home has a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Older rooms often suit panelled doors, newer rooms plainer ones. For a home in Charlton, door styles are talked through during the design visit. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

What we do not do

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish that suits period homes. You choose the paint colour.

Shelves

Some shelves can be set to move as your storage changes.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Your needs may change once the cupboards are in use. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you, so the space keeps working.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it’s best done early.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fitting day, we check the route in as well as the room, so fitted cupboards arrive in sections that fit through. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Charlton

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Charlton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Charlton?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

It depends on the job. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.
