Fitted wardrobes in Greenwich: how it works
Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and too little room for clothes.
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
How our quotes work
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
What’s near Plumstead
Around Plumstead, we cover homes near Shooters Hill Sixth Form College, St John's Church and Plumstead Common, among other places. Also close by are The Queens Arms (close by, under half a mile north-west), Plumstead Manor School (a few minutes’ walk south-east) and South Rise Primary School (under half a mile south-east). Plumstead has its own railway station: Plumstead station. Nearby you’ll also find British Hospital for Mothers and Babies (1.3 miles west) and Gallions Reach Shopping Park (1.6 miles north).
Fitted wardrobes for homes across Greenwich
Greenwich has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have.
The biggest shares of homes in Greenwich were built since 2000 (about 26%) and before 1919 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. A quarter or more of the homes in Greenwich (about 26%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 43% of households in Greenwich, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Plumstead: Danson House, about 2.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Near listed buildings like The Old Vicarage, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Plumstead, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
What prompts fitted wardrobes
A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Storage built into the slope uses space that would otherwise go to waste.
We are often asked to help with:
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
Boards, parts and paint
Hanging rails
We place rails at the heights your clothes need: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
What it costs
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- The overall size of the piece
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Parking and unloading on your street
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you contact us:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Your postcode and the borough
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Where other trades come in
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home, ready to assemble in the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Will the quote be in writing?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
Questions we are often asked
How do I get a quote?
Simply message us from the contact page. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We talk through both at the design visit.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
