Fitted wardrobes in Old Chiswick, Hounslow

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Old Chiswick starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

What we don’t do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood

Fitted wardrobes in Old Chiswick

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where the space allows. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. For a bedroom in Old Chiswick, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. Most enquiries start with space under the eaves going to waste and dusty space on top of the wardrobe, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Old Chiswick date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Old Chiswick

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Old Chiswick?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

My house in Old Chiswick is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. If you’re in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Is the furniture made to order?

We make it in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the measuring visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It is planned so there is room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Tall doors need a stable material. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting, for plain or panelled doors alike.

Hanging rails

We keep the top rail at a height you can reach. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift

Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.

Bedrooms in Old Chiswick: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the area around Old Chiswick, with about 14% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Old Chiswick, 14 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 55% of homes in the neighbourhood around Old Chiswick were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that aren’t straight.

For a flat near Chiswick station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near The William Hogarth Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live near Turnham Green, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
