Fitted Wardrobes in Woodlands
Planning fitted wardrobes for a home in Woodlands? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote.
- Not enough hanging space
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
- Space under the eaves going to waste
Fitted wardrobes designed for your room
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Moving home often prompts it. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or will not go up the stairs at all. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
Syon House, about 1.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Choosing a carpenter
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
How we make fitted wardrobes for Woodlands
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. People normally come to us about damp or musty clothes against an external wall and dusty space on top of the wardrobe, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage normally goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Woodlands, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Getting a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
- Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
- Empty the area where we’ll be working
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. A little ventilation in the room helps.

If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Inwood Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Woodlands?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London, and Woodlands is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Woodlands?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It’s planned so there is room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
We plan it with you at the design visit, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
