Fitted wardrobes in EC2Y: how it works
A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall. There is no dusty gap on top and no awkward space at the ends. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in EC2Y, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. Typical reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.
- You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.
What goes into your quote
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
- More than 300 projects completed
- Every quote follows a design visit
Starting with a design visit
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bedroom storage across EC2Y
Homes across EC2Y, EC2Y included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Fitted wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. You choose the colour and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 40% of the housing in EC2Y, with about 27% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 40% of homes in the EC2Y postcode district were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall. About 27% of homes in EC2Y were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
City of London: If you live in a period home close to St Olave Old Jewry, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Mansion House, about 0.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line the doors up again.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Storage built into the slope uses space that would otherwise go to waste, leaving the floor open.
People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Space under the eaves going to waste
Questions we’re often asked
Where is the furniture made?
We make it in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
We plan it with you during the design visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
