Fitted wardrobes across EC1A: what to expect

Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no space in front for doors to swing and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A written quote follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Homes across EC1A and their bedrooms

Homes across EC1A, EC1A among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways.

The biggest shares of homes in the EC1A postcode district were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and since 2000 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than a third of the homes in the EC1A postcode district (about 40%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick. About 27% of homes in the EC1A postcode district were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so we look at both at the measuring visit.

City of London: Mansion House, about 0.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like Church of St Lawrence Jewry, under half a mile north of the centre of City of London, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

Moving home often prompts it. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or may not make it up the stairs. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

How we price fitted wardrobes

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard wardrobes can’t follow a slope. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour before we start.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in EC1A

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in EC1A?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes EC1A.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
