Fitted wardrobes in Coney Hall
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no space in front for doors to swing and storage boxes stacked under the bed.
Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. A big part of the housing around Coney Hall is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.
Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Bedrooms in Coney Hall: local notes
In the streets around Coney Hall, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 63%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Coney Hall. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 61% of households in the area around Coney Hall, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
The wider area includes historic houses like Addington Palace, about 1.2 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is one of the older houses near St Francis of Assisi, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Living in a block of flats near West Wickham station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Coney Hall is about 5 miles east of Orpington, part of the London Borough of Bromley. Anywhere in Coney Hall, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Across Bromley, we cover Coney Hall.

Before and after fitting day
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
- Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.
Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, particularly on an external wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and deal with any damp early.
What affects the price in Coney Hall
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How square the room is
- The width and height of the space
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
What to send when you get in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Approximate measurements of the space
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Questions from Coney Hall
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Coney Hall?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Coney Hall?
Yes. Coney Hall is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
