Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hayes

An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. If your home has clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and a room too narrow for hinged doors, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage usually goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Hayes, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Advice

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hayes

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Hayes?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Hayes is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hayes?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

Bromley Palace, about 2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

How to choose a carpenter in London

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hayes

About 72% of the homes in the area around Hayes went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 16% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hayes include The Rectory (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south, and Hayes Grove Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. All of London, Bromley included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Hayes fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

For families living near Hawes Down Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary the Virgin, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

What affects the price in Hayes

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The width and height of the space
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Approximate measurements of the space

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
