Fitted wardrobes in Crossness, Bexley

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Crossness, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go

Fitted wardrobes in Crossness: what you get

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about empty alcoves in the bedroom and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We check during the design visit and choose fixings for each one. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Crossness?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Abbey Wood station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

The wider area includes historic houses such as Rainham Hall, about 2.8 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Bedrooms in Crossness: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Crossness, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 63%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Bexley is no exception. If your road in Crossness falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Abbey Wood station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Lesnes Abbey Woods? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Wardrobe shelves can carry more weight than you’d think. Birch plywood keeps them flat.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Tall doors need a stable material. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well.
