Bexleyheath Fitted Wardrobes

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Bexleyheath starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Fitted wardrobes in Bexleyheath

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where the space allows. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. For a bedroom in Bexleyheath, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves in the bedroom and too little room for clothes, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage normally goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Bexleyheath, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Bexleyheath

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 51% of the housing in the streets around Bexleyheath, with about 19% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Bexleyheath. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Bexley sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Bexleyheath, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Red House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Bexleyheath station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Upland Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

In period rooms, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what makes the wardrobe look built in.

Hanging rails

Long rails need support so they do not bend under heavy coats to carry a full load. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bexleyheath?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do you cover homes near Bexleyheath station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
