How we make fitted wardrobes for Forestdale

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. If you are living with a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and not enough hanging space, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Post-war bedrooms often have a wide window with a radiator underneath, which leaves the other walls for storage. Around Forestdale, many homes date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so we expect to plan around a radiator. Nothing is built tight over the radiator, so it keeps heating the room.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What it costs

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, message us from the contact page. The written quote follows the visit.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Forestdale?

Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or may not make it up the stairs. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors

Living in a block of flats near Sanderstead station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a post-war house, the hall and stairs are usually straight and simple, which helps when the sections come in. The way in is still measured, along with the room. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You tell us about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Bedroom storage in Forestdale

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 53% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Forestdale, with about 37% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 42% of households in the area around Forestdale live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Forestdale is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a family home near Courtwood Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live in a period home close to St Francis, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Forestdale

Is Forestdale in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, Forestdale is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Sanderstead station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the doors hang true.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
