Questions from Coombe

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Coombe?

Yes, Coombe is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

I live in a flat in Coombe. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The wardrobes are made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Fitted wardrobes in Coombe: what you get

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall. There is no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in Coombe, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. Most enquiries start with not enough hanging space and space under the eaves going to waste; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A good share of the homes around Coombe were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war bedrooms tend to be simple shapes, so fitted furniture can run cleanly across a wall. Some have a built-in cupboard over the stairs already, which can be opened up or reworked. The fixings are chosen for the wall, whether it is blockwork, concrete or brick.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.

  1. You send us some details about the room and the storage you need, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Advice

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Coombe

Moving home often prompts it. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

If you live in a period home close to Church Hall United Reformed Church Of St Paul, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking near your home
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • How you want to use the space

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Bedroom storage in Coombe

About 43% of the homes in the area around Coombe went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 36% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Coombe, Historic England’s list includes Lodge to Combe House (st Margaret's School) (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Coombe House (st Margaret's School) (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are more common around Coombe than across Croydon: about 52% of households, against about 29%, based on Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

If you live near Addington Hills, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If you live in a flat close to South Croydon station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

When you need someone else

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Structural changes to the room
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
