Fitted wardrobes in Strawberry Hill: what you get
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. That layout is worth knowing around Strawberry Hill, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast, leaving the breast itself clear. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front as you prefer. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.
Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

What affects the price in Strawberry Hill
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
Getting in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Near listed buildings like Chapel in the Wood, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Strawberry Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Marble Hill Park, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Is Strawberry Hill in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Strawberry Hill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Strawberry Hill?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We plan it with you when we visit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
How do I get a quote?
The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls, so the space is used and there’s nowhere for dust to collect on top. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Why choose us
- Work across the whole of London
- Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- Finished by spray or by hand
Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
