Fitted wardrobes in Mortlake, Richmond upon Thames

Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Fitted wardrobes in Mortlake

Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage boxes stacked under the bed and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, which matters around Mortlake, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. If you’re renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Mortlake station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Mortlake?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What affects the price in Mortlake

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Fitted wardrobes in Mortlake: local notes

In the streets around Mortlake, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Mortlake, 19 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Mortlake is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the measuring visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Parish Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses like Chiswick House, about 1.3 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your children go to Thomson House School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
