Fitted wardrobes in Teddington

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Teddington, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

Before the design visit

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, use our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes in Teddington: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Teddington were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 23 entries within half a mile of the centre of Teddington. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Teddington joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a flat near Teddington station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. Its height can be set to match the skirting.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Teddington

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Teddington?

Yes. Teddington is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

My house in Teddington is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We look at it with you when we measure.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • Tell us which walls face outside

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then to keep them running smoothly. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, particularly where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes.

What we do not do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
